SIMON WIESENTHAL
(1908 - 2005)

Born December 31, 1908, in Buczacz/ Galicia (Austro- Hungarian
Empire, later Poland, then USSR, now the Ukraine).
Father: Asher Wiesenthal, merchant, killed in action as an Austrian
soldier in 1915.
Mother: Rosa, nee Rapp.
Simon Wiesenthal has been married to his wife, Cyla, since 1936.
Elementary school in Lvov and Vienna; high school in Buczacz,
graduated in 1928. Studied architecture at the Czech Technical
University in Prague; returned to Poland and continued studies
at the polytechnic in Lvov. In 1940, he received his degree in
architecture and engineering.
In 1941, following German occupation, Simon Wiesenthal was imprisoned
in several Jewish ghettos and in various Nazi concentration camps.
After liberation of Mauthausen concentration camp near Linz, Austria,
by the US Armed Forces in May, 1945, Wiesenthal was employed with
the US War Crimes Office and the OSS.
In 1947, he founded the Jewish Documentation Center dedicated
to tracking down Nazi criminals. The Center was first based in
Linz, and moved to Vienna in 1961. This office has so far been
responsible for bringing to justice c. 1,100 Nazi criminals from
around the world.
